Siliguri, 05th September: A significant protest erupted at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) on Wednesday as medical students raised concerns about a pervasive ‘threat culture’ within the institution.
The unrest led to the resignation of Dean Dr. Sandeep Sengupta and Assistant Dean Sudipta Sheel, who stepped down in response to the mounting protests.
Reportedly, students accused the dean of complicity in aiding individuals during exams and inflating marks. The protests, which began early Wednesday, also included demands for the resignation of the principal. Allegations ranged from threats and intimidation, including threats of sexual violence against a female student doctor, to the manipulation of exam scores.
In response to the escalating situation, a five-member investigation committee was formed, initially excluding the surgery department but later including it due to continued protests. A written complaint was also lodged with the police. The principal noted that a bundle of complaints had been submitted but claimed to have been unaware of them prior to this.
On Thursday morning, a poster appeared in the administration building at NBMCH, featuring the names and pictures of two Trinamool student leaders, and Abhik Dey, further intensifying the atmosphere on campus.
