Gajoldoba, 13th September: In an effort to solve the drinking water crisis in Siliguri, Mayor Gautam Deb laid the foundation stone for the first phase of the ‘Amrut 2.0’ water project in Gajoldoba. The inauguration took place near Hawa Mahal on Friday.
Along with Mayor Deb, other notable attendees included Rajganj MLA Khageswar Roy, Municipal Corporation Chairman Pratul Chakraborty, Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar, MMIC Dulal Dutta, councillors, and engineers from the Municipal Corporation.
Reports indicate that the project will cost approximately Rs 511 crore under the ‘Amrut 2.0’ initiative. The foundation stone for the first phase, costing around Rs 204 crore, was laid today. The plan involves drawing water from Gajoldoba to Fulbari via pipelines, where it will be purified before being distributed as drinking water to Siliguri.
Mayor Gautam Deb mentioned that the first phase includes laying a 28 km pipeline, with work costing 204 crores. The tender for the second phase has already been completed, and the mayor expressed hope that the full-scale project would commence before the Puja festival.
He also stated that the Fulbari alternative water disposal center is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed ahead of the Puja celebrations. Upon completion of the Amrit project, residents of Siliguri will receive clean and safe drinking water.
