Man dies of heart block at NBMCH, families refuse to perform last rites

Siliguri, 12th May: An inhumane incident surfaced from the Binoy More pipeline area in South Shantinagar, Siliguri, where a family refused to perform the last rites of a man after he died of a heart attack at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.

Subrata Kar, a resident of the said area, died of a heart block at the hospital on Tuesday night. The body was brought home in a hearse van. Surprisingly, neither the family members nor the neighbours came forward to receive the body and take it for cremation. The van with Subrata’s body stood in front of his house the whole night.

Seeing the body this morning, a stir was created in the area. Later, the Ashighar outpost police and the members of a voluntary organization took the body to the crematorium. After the incident, the members of the voluntary organization raised questions about the role of the residents and family members.

It has been learned that the deceased left behind his wife and a three-year-old child. Upon contacting the other family members, they refused to attend the funeral.
