Man dies in Police custody, atmosphere of tension witnessed in Matigara

Siliguri, 27th February: An atmosphere of tension was witnessed in Matigara following the death of a person in police custody. The Matigara Police took a man named Bechan Roy to the police station, on Wednesday afternoon, on the charges of selling liquor. However, later in the evening, the family members of Roy were informed that Roy fell ill. Roy was taken to the Matigara Block Hospital, where he died.


Rahul Roy, the son of Bechan Roy, alleged that his father was beaten to death by the police. He also demanded that the entire incident be investigated and strict actions be taken against the police officers responsible for the incident.

On Thursday morning, the Magistrate went to the Matigara Block Hospital for examination and the body was sent to the North Bengal Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. However, the family members of the deceased and the local people staged a protest by stopping the ambulance in front of the Matigara Police station.


Meanwhile, a huge police force has been deployed at the Matigara Police station, since morning, to avoid any untoward incident.
