Naxalbari, 09th August: A man accused of theft died after being allegedly beaten by a mob after he was caught during an alleged theft attempt at Dayaram Jote in Naxalbari. The deceased has been identified as Suraj Oraon, a resident of Satbhaiya Division of Atal Tea Estate.
According to reports, Suraj allegedly attempted to break into a house in Dayaram Jote but got his leg stuck in the gaps of a window grill. The homeowner reportedly spotted him and apprehended him, following which news of the incident spread and a crowd gathered at the spot.
The accused was allegedly beaten severely by several people before the police were informed. Police personnel reached the location and, in their presence, the injured man was taken to Naxalbari Rural Hospital in critical condition.
Despite undergoing treatment for around two hours, Suraj Oraon succumbed to his injuries.
Police have arrested Suraj Mallick and Ranjan Sen in connection with the incident. Meanwhile, the deceased’s body has been sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for a post-mortem examination.
An investigation has been initiated based on a written complaint, and police are probing the circumstances surrounding the mob assault and the subsequent death.
