Malda, 23rd February: Charges have been raised against five men for lynching their neighbor to death after a dispute broke out between the two families over a mobile phone.
The incident surfaced on late Saturday, from the Schoolpara area of Sujapur Gram Panchayat in Malda. The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Alimul Sheikh. Meanwhile, all accused are absconding after the incident.
According to sources, Sheikh’s son and grandson of his neighbor, Malla Bakkas, were playing with a mobile phone together when it accidentally fell and broke. With this, a dispute broke out between the two families. As the quarrel escalated, 5 men including Bakkas allegedly attacked Sheikh on his head with an iron rod and sticks, injuring Sheikh severely. He was immediately rushed to the Malda Medical College-Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, early Sunday morning while undergoing treatment.
The police recovered the body and sent it for an autopsy. The family of the deceased lodged a complaint at the Kaliachak Police Station, based on which the police are investigating into the matter.
