Naxalbari, 09th April: A liquor smuggling attempt to Bihar was foiled during naka checking in Naxalbari, leading to the seizure of a large consignment of liquor and the arrest of one person.
According to sources, the Election Commission’s Static Surveillance Team was conducting routine checks at Rathkhola More on the Asian Highway. Around noon, a pickup van travelling from Siliguri towards Bihar was intercepted at the checkpoint.
Officials grew suspicious after noticing a green tarpaulin covering the seemingly empty vehicle. Upon searching the van, they recovered 39 cartons of liquor concealed inside.
Following the seizure, the consignment, along with the vehicle and driver, was handed over to the Naxalbari Police Station for further legal action.
The driver, identified as Soumya Bagchi, a resident of Surya Sen Colony in Siliguri, was arrested on charges of liquor smuggling. He is scheduled to be produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court on Friday.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
