Siliguri, 22nd March: Tension prevailed in Siliguri’s Ward No. 42 near Eastern Bypass following allegations that a liquor shop was operating under the guise of a departmental store. Members of Siliguri Rajbanshi Kshatriya Welfare Society staged a protest, demanding immediate closure of the establishment.
On Sunday, Protesters gathered in front of the shop, holding placards and raising slogans. They alleged that liquor was being sold under the cover of a departmental store, warning that such activities could negatively impact the social environment of the locality.
Residents pointed out that a licensed liquor shop had earlier been opened at the same location in 2024 but was shut down following strong opposition from the residents. The reopening of a similar outlet at the site has once again triggered outrage among locals.
Upon receiving information, police from Bhaktinagar Police Station reached the spot. Shobha Subba, Councillor of Ward No. 42, also visited the area and held discussions with both the protesters and shop representatives and brought the situation under control.
Addressing the issue, Subba stated that residents’ concerns are being taken seriously. She informed that the shop owner is currently away for medical treatment and assured that a meeting involving all will be convened upon his return to resolve the matter.
Following assurances from the councillor and police, the protesters eventually called off their agitation. Subsequently, the shop was shut down.
