Land mafias attempt to seize DI Fund land in Siliguri, complaint filed at Matigara police station

Siliguri, 24th January: Despite directives from State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, allegations of land mafias terrorizing Siliguri continue. The latest case involves around 70 kathas of DI Fund government land in Matigara II Gram Panchayat.

Reportedly, the Thapa family, who have been living on the land for decades, allege that mafias are trying to forcibly take possession. The family claims to have submitted applications to the administration in 1987 and 2007 regarding ownership rights.

According to the family, after the four-lane elevated road project, the value of the land increased, drawing the attention of mafias. On the night of 10th January, JCB machines were allegedly used to demolish shops and build walls. Women protesting were reportedly threatened.

The Thapa family has filed a complaint with the police but alleges that no strict action has been taken so far. DI Fund lands fall under the jurisdiction of the District Magistrate. The matter has also reached Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb. Now the question remains what steps the administration and police will take to prevent illegal occupation of government land.
