Siliguri, 10th December: In a distressing incident, the body of an infant was recovered from a heap of garbage near the rear gate of Surya Sen Park along the banks of the Mahananda River on Wednesday. The body was found in a mutilated condition.
Reportedy, police from the Panitanki Outpost reached the spot and took the body into custody. The infant was taken to Siliguri District Hospital and later sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for post-mortem examination.
According to police, the gender of the infant has not yet been confirmed and a forensic examination is being conducted to determine the same.
The incident came to light after a child playing in the park noticed the body and informed local residents. Eyewitnesses said the infant was around two to two-and-a-half months old and had multiple injury marks on the body.
Police have started an investigation to identify the parents of the infant and to ascertain who dumped the body at the location. Further action will be taken after the post-mortem report is received.
