Former Indian football captain Chuni Goswami, who led India to the 1962 Asian Games gold, passed away at a hospital in Kolkata, on Thursday evening, after a prolonged illness.
For the last few months, Goswami was suffering from underlying ailments. His family confirmed that Goswami was admitted to a city hospital earlier in the day and breathed his last at 5 pm after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Chuni Goswami was the most successful Indian football captain ever and under his captaincy, India won the gold medal in 1962 Asian Games, finished runners-up in 1964 Asian Cup, and narrowly lost to Burma in Merdeka football six months later.
