Sikkim, 20th May: Landslides and roadblocks following heavy rains in Lachen, Lachung and Chungthang on Friday, led to the stranding of approximately 500 tourists travelling to Lachung and Lachen valley. The Indian Army, upon request from the SDM Chungthang, swiftly came to the rescue. Troops of Trishakti Corps rescued the stranded tourists, consisting of 216 males, 113 females, and 54 children, and provided them with shelter, hot meals, and warm clothing in three different Army Camps.
Additionally, three medical teams were assembled to conduct thorough medical assessments of all the tourists. Although most were stable, one woman who had visited Gurudogmar Lake earlier in the day exhibited symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and received immediate medical attention. She was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the medical hospital. Fortunately, her condition improved by morning, and she remained stable.
The troops’ prompt action averted any mishaps and ensured the comfort of the stranded tourists. Efforts are underway to clear the roads for vehicular movement, and the tourists will continue to receive assistance until the route is open for further travel.
