Siliguri, 11th January: Despite assurances, fares of tourist vehicles have not been increased since 2008. Opposing this, an indefinite taxi strike has been called in Bagdogra from Tuesday. Various unions have extended their support to the strike.
Reportedly, after 2008, the price of petrol and diesel has gone up and so has the price of car parts. But taxi fares have remained as before. As a result, the drivers are facing problems supporting their family. They alleged that they have demanded a hike in fare several times in the past too. As their demands have not been met, a taxi strike has been called from Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Minister Goutam Deb has already informed the Chief Minister about the demands of the taxi drivers. He is likely to hold a discussion in this regard with the drivers in a few days.
