Illegal online betting and extortion busted in Siliguri, two accused arrested

Siliguri, 08th January: Bhakti Nagar Police have cracked down on an illegal online betting and extortion racket, arresting two accused named in a complaint after nearly two months of investigation. The arrested persons have been identified as Subham Agrawal and Sanju Agrawal.


According to police sources, the case originated from a complaint filed by Vijay Prasad at Bhakti Nagar Police Station. The complaint alleged that an organised gang was operating illegal online betting and share trading activities and had demanded ₹15 lakh from the complainant.

As per the complaint, on the night of 26th November, the accused visited the victim’s residence and threatened him to pay ₹15 lakh within two days. The following night, on 27th November, the victim was allegedly assaulted near Haidar Para, and a gold chain weighing around 25 grams was forcibly snatched from his neck. The injured victim was later admitted to hospital for treatment.


Following the incident, both accused went absconding. Police had been searching for them for the past two months. Acting on inputs from confidential sources, Bhakti Nagar Police conducted a raid and arrested both accused.

After their arrest, the accused were produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Thursday. Police said interrogation is underway, and efforts are being made to identify other individuals linked to the illegal online betting network.

Police sources added that both arrested individuals are well-known figures in Siliguri, and their arrest has triggered widespread discussion in the city. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
