Siliguri, 17th June: A tragic train accident occurred on Monday morning in Rangapani, located in the Siliguri sub-division. The Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express was struck from behind by a freight train, causing several carriages of the passenger train to derail. This catastrophic incident resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries among the passengers.
Reportedly, the loco pilot of the goods train died on the spot, trapped in the engine. Railway officials promptly arrived at the scene, followed by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) from various parts of North Bengal to initiate rescue operations. The fire brigade also responded swiftly to the emergency.
Senior railway officials from multiple departments are currently on-site, overseeing the situation. More than 50 ambulances were deployed to the location, transporting the injured to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for treatment. Rescue and relief efforts continue as authorities work to manage the aftermath of this devastating accident.
