Gunfire inside bank in Bidhannagar injures five, treatment underway; security guard detained

Siliguri, 06th January: Five people were injured after a gun fired inside a nationalised bank branch at Bidhannagar in Phansidewa block on Tuesday. The injured have been identified as Mary Nag (37), Sonali Nag (14), Mohammad Nurul Haque (35), Sanjita Pradhan (41) and Biplab Singh (30). The security guard on duty has been detained.


According to sources, the security guard was performing his duty inside the bank when his gun accidentally fell from his hand and discharged. As a result, several people present inside the bank sustained bullet injuries to their legs. The incident triggered panic in the area, forcing people to rush out of the bank in fear.

Police from Bidhannagar Investigation Centre reached the spot promptly and brought the situation under control. The injured were first taken to the Bidhannagar Primary Health Centre, where they received initial treatment. They were later shifted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH).


As the condition of the injured deteriorated at NBMCH, all five were transferred to a private hospital in Siliguri for advanced treatment. Doctors said special medical attention is being given to the injured minor, Sonali Nag.

Following the incident, Bidhannagar police detained the security guard, identified as Manik Roy, along with the firearm used. He is being questioned. Police are investigating whether the incident was purely accidental or if any other factors were involved.
