Siliguri, 01st September: The Food Safety Department, in coordination with the Siliguri Municipal Corporation and Enforcement Branch, conducted a special inspection drive at several hotels and restaurants in Siliguri on Tuesday to check food quality, hygiene and compliance with food safety regulations.
A joint team carried out surprise inspections at several prominent hotels and restaurants along the stretch from Siliguri Junction to Salugara. During the drive, officials inspected kitchens, storage rooms, freezers, food storage facilities and the hygiene practices followed by staff.
The team also checked the quality of food served to customers and examined the quality of spices, cooking oil, dairy products, vegetables and other raw materials used in food preparation. Expiry dates, packaging, storage temperatures and compliance with food safety regulations were also inspected.
During the inspections, samples of certain food items were collected and will be sent to a laboratory for testing. Officials said that if any irregularities or deficiencies in food quality are found in the test reports, action will be taken against the concerned establishments under the Food Safety Act.
Enforcement Department ACP Farukh Mohammad Chowdhury said inspections were conducted at hotels and restaurants in the Siliguri Junction area, focusing on kitchen hygiene and food quality. He said food samples were collected and would be sent to a laboratory to assess their safety for consumers.
He added that fire licences and other required documents of the hotels and restaurants were also checked. No major irregularities were found in the documents during the inspections, he said.
Hotel and restaurant managements were instructed to comply with the prescribed regulations and ensure that customers are provided with clean and safe food.
The Food Safety Department said surprise inspections of hotels and restaurants across the city will continue and that negligence or violations of food safety standards will not be tolerated.
