Siliguri, 16th June: Jamai Shasti is widely celebrated by Bengalis and is a festival that is dedicated to the bond the sons-in-law share with their mothers-in-law. The day is observed on the sixth day of the traditional Hindu calendar’s Jyestha month. This year, it is being celebrated on June 16, Wednesday.

On the occasion of Jamai Shasti, mothers-in-law prepare a special feast for their sons-in-law. The meal consists of various lip-smacking Bengali delicacies, out of which Ilish(Hilsa) Mach(fish) is the most important. Hilsa of various weights is being sold in the city’s markets from Wednesday morning. The price of 1 kg of hilsa is around 1400-1600 rupees today. Some even returned home disappointed due to the high price.

Meanwhile, due to the ongoing pandemic, markets were less crowded compared to the previous years. Fish sellers said that this time the import of fish has decreased due to the pandemic. Due to which the price of fish has increased. Apart from Hilsa, the prices of all other types of fish were a bit higher than other days.
