Siliguri, 03rd September: Several months after the death of youth Shankar Chhetri in a tragic road accident on Sevoke Road in Siliguri, his family has alleged that justice has still not been delivered. On Thursday, family members, relatives and acquaintances of Shankar staged a protest outside the Siliguri court, demanding a speedy trial and strict legal action against the accused.
It is to be noted that, a few months ago, Shankar Chhetri and Kajal Rai were walking from the Bhakti Nagar side towards Panitanki on Sevoke Road at night when, allegedly, a speeding white car hit them. The impact reportedly threw both of them around 20 to 30 feet away.
Following the accident, local residents rushed both injured individuals to a hospital, where doctors declared Shankar Chhetri dead. Kajal Rai sustained serious injuries in the accident.
Police subsequently launched an investigation to trace the vehicle and its driver. According to Shankar’s family, the accused driver fled the spot after the accident. Police later identified and arrested the accused with the help of CCTV footage, the vehicle’s registration number and technical information.
However, the family alleged that despite the arrest, around six to seven months have passed and they are still awaiting justice. They questioned why the judicial process has taken so long despite the availability of CCTV footage and other evidence related to the accident.
On Thursday, Shankar’s family members and acquaintances staged a protest outside the Siliguri court, demanding that legal action be taken against the accused at the earliest and that justice be delivered. Kajal Rai, who was with Shankar on the night of the accident, also joined the protest along with his family members.
The family members expressed their anger over the prolonged wait for justice and demanded speedy completion of the legal process.
