Excise raid uncovers about Rs 6 crore worth of adulterated liquor in Maynaguri

Maynaguri, 25th May: In a significant operation, excise department officials uncovered adulterated liquor worth about Rs 6 crore in the Kajaldighi area of Ramshai Gram Panchayat, under the Maynaguri block of Jalpaiguri district. The raid, which lasted about eight hours, revealed a staggering quantity of illicit liquor, marking one of the largest such recoveries in North Bengal in recent times.


Reportedly, the raid, initiated by the Jalpaiguri Sadar Excise Department on Friday afternoon, targeted a clandestine factory producing counterfeit liquor. Acting on a tip-off from secret sources, officials raided the residence of Niranjan Roy. They discovered numerous bottles of illegal foreign liquor, several barrels, and a substantial amount of brewing equipment.

Deputy Commissioner Sujit Das of the Jalpaiguri Division of the Excise Department stated that the scale of the operation was unprecedented in recent memory. He added that liquor worth about Rs 6 crore was recovered. Such alcohol is very harmful to health, and consuming it can be fatal. Further, he stated that despite the extensive raid, the primary accused, Niranjan Roy, remains at large, and a manhunt is underway.


The operation, which began at noon and continued until night, resulted in the seizure of seven carts loaded with illegal liquor and brewing apparatus. This incident has caused a sensation in the Ramshai Gram Panchayat area, bringing to light the severe issue of illegal liquor production and its potential risks to public health.

Significantly, the excise department continues its efforts to crack down on such illegal activities and is urging the public to remain vigilant against the dangers posed by adulterated alcohol.
