Siliguri, 29th May: On the occasion of Everest Day, Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb, and a member of the environmentalist voluntary organization – NEF, Animesh Basu, have once again raised the demand to honour Tenzing Norgay with the ‘Bharat Ratna’.
Reportedly, the 29th of May is marked as the Everest Day. About 71 years ago in 1953, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa had ascended the Mount Everest along with Edmund Hillary. Since then, every year this day has been celebrated as Everest Day in Siliguri.
Like every year, on this day the statue of Tenzing Norgay at Darjeeling More was garlanded and commemorated. The event was graced by the presence of various dignitaries including Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar.
