Nagrakata, 09th November: A 6-month-old elephant calf got separated from its herd from the Bamandanga tea garden in Nagrakata, on Monday morning.
Reportedly, the calf was sighted wandering around the tea garden’s factory premises. Following which, the calf entered the manager’s bungalow. The forest department was immediately informed. Acting promptly, the forest workers guided the calf back to the forest.
Raj Kumar Layek, a ranger at Khuniya Square of the Wildlife Branch, is hopeful that the elephant calf will be united with its herd soon. He said that the calf is currently being monitored.
It is to be noted that another elephant calf got separated from its herd from the Red Bank tea garden, last Saturday evening. However, despite many attempts, the forest workers were unable to unite the calf with its herd. Later, the calf was taken to Gorumara National Park’s Peelkhana.
Seema Chowdhury, Honorary Wildlife Warden of the Forest Department, said that it is a challenging task to return the separated elephant calf to its mother or raise it in a human shelter if the mother refuses to take it back.
