Siliguri, 26th January: Dr. Mahendra Nath Roy has been announced as a recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award. The announcement by the central government brought an emotional response from him.
Professor Roy, former Dean of the Science Faculty at North Bengal University and former Vice-Chancellor of Alipurduar University, has been recognised for his long-standing contribution to chemistry education and service to society.
Dr. Roy described the award as the greatest achievement of his life, recalling his humble beginnings in a farmer’s family and firsthand experiences of poverty. He emphasized that he does not view the honour as a personal achievement but as recognition of the countless individuals who quietly work for the betterment of society.
Despite economic challenges, social obstacles, and personal struggles, Dr. Roy has remained committed to making a positive impact on people’s lives. Previously, he has received several accolades, including the Shiksharatna, Shiksha Jyoti, Bangabhushan, and CV Raman awards.
