Dowry death: Siliguri woman killed after dowry demand of Rs. 3 lakh

Siliguri, 16th February: Dowries are illegal in India but every now and then, deaths due to dowry demands often tend to come to light. Another shocking case of dowry death surfaced from Siliguri. Laxmi Sarkar Biswas was allegedly killed by her in-laws after they demanded 3 lakh rupees as dowry.


According to sources, Laxmi tied the knot with Ujjal Biswas, a resident of the Kharibari Police Station area, about five years ago. They have a three-year-old daughter. Laxmi’s family alleged that after three years of marriage, her in-laws demanded a dowry of 3 lakh rupees. They even used to torture her regarding it.

On Saturday, after Laxmi’s body was found hanging from the noose, her sister Ratna Sarkar alleged that Laxmi was strangled to death and was hanged by her in-laws. Laxmi’s family members have also filed a complaint at the police station, based on which, the police are investigating the incident.
