Doctor allegedly attacked in Siliguri, conflicting claims emerge

Siliguri, 23rd February: Tension spread across Siliguri following an incident in which Dr. Mainak Mukherjee, a doctor at a private hospital, was allegedly attacked near a multistory complex on Hill Cart Road.

According to Dr. Mukherjee, he was struck from behind while exiting a salon. He claimed that the attack was unprovoked and stated that he informed the city’s mayor about the incident. He also said he intends to file a written complaint at Siliguri police station.

However, a local businessman at the market near the incident offered a different version. He stated that thefts had been occurring in the market for several days. On the day of the incident, shopkeepers caught a thief and, in their anger, were assaulting him. Dr. Mukherjee reportedly arrived at the scene, and in the ensuing scuffle, his body was accidentally touched. The businessman claimed that the doctor was not deliberately harmed.

The Joint Secretary of the Bidhan Market Byabasayee Samiti commented that taking the law into one’s own hands to prevent theft is unacceptable. He added that no innocent person should be harmed in the process. He demanded a proper legal investigation and appropriate action against those found guilty.
