Siliguri, 12th December: Allegations have surfaced against a doctor at Siliguri District Hospital for reportedly slapping a patient, sparking outrage within the hospital premises.
The incident occurred on Thursday when Mou Mandal visited the hospital with breathing difficulties. According to her family, the attending doctor initially claimed that the patient’s condition was not serious and allowed her to leave. However, Mou’s condition worsened shortly after stepping outside, prompting his family to return to the hospital, where she was admitted to the observation ward.
Family members allege that the doctor physically assaulted Mou during treatment and displayed inhumane behaviour under the guise of medical care. The incident led to protests by the patient’s relatives within the hospital, creating a tense situation. Siliguri Police later arrived and brought the situation under control.
The family stated that the behaviour of a doctor, who is responsible for patient safety, was unacceptable. Meanwhile, the doctor denied the allegations, asserting that no slap was given and that the patient’s condition was not critical.
He added that Mou had psychological issues and that measures like giving water and encouraging movement were part of standard medical care or the “line of treatment.”
Hospital authorities and Siliguri Police have initiated an investigation into the incident. The hospital administration has assured that appropriate action will be taken if any misconduct by the doctor is established.
