Delhi Police crackdown double murder of women hailing from Darjeeling

Days after two female domestic workers from Darjeeling were found dead inside a four-storey house in South Delhi’s Jangpura Extension, the Delhi Police arrested five men for allegedly smothering the women to death and stealing Rs 90 lakh from the house.


According to the police, the five men had come with ropes, cutters and chloroform late on Sunday to commit burglary at the house. Police suspect the two women were smothered at different times during the early hours of Monday. The victims have been identified as Meena Rai (35), who worked as domestic help and Sujaila Gurung (40), a nursing attendant. They had been working in the house for the last 5-6 months. Both women hailed from Darjeeling and their husbands work in Gurgaon. 

According to the information, the incident came to light on Monday morning at around 9.30 am when the family’s dog trainer rang the doorbell and got no response. The man then called the building owner, after which she went to check on the two women and found them dead on the ground and the first floor. Reportedly, Meena Rai, whom they found lying dead on the first floor. Her hands and legs were tied with plastic ropes and her mouth was taped. Sujaila Gurung was found lying dead in a room on the second floor. 


Acting promptly, the police initiated an investigation and questioned the security guards who reportedly claimed that the five men carrying large bags were seen in the neighbourhood. The police caught hold of CCTV footages backing the claim. The footage showed five masked men walking outside the house on the night of the incident. 

The police found a motorbike left the area by the accused. The bike number was traced and the owner was identified as Sachit Saxena. Saxena was then nabbed with his associates Prashant Basista (22), Dhananjay, Ramesh and Aniket.
