Siliguri, 28th October: Darjeeling District Congress announced the ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ campaign at a press conference on Wednesday, calling for a nationwide movement to protect voting rights and democracy and raising allegations of ‘vote chori’. Sanjay Kapoor, All India Congress Committee observer and former MLA, announced the campaign during the press conference.
The press conference was attended by Nirmal Ghosh Dastidar, observer and vice-president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, former Mayor Gangotri Dutta and Darjeeling District Congress Working President Jiban Majumdar.
Sanjay Kapoor criticised the Central Government and the Election Commission, alleging that irregularities in voter lists and the deletion of voters’ names were being used to weaken the democratic system. He also urged the general public to check their names in the electoral rolls using their EPIC numbers.
Questioning the neutrality of the Election Commission, Kapoor announced that a public rally would be held at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on 01st November, with partners of the INDIA alliance participating. He also criticised the Central Government over issues such as rising prices, unemployment and corruption.
Darjeeling District Congress said it would conduct public awareness programmes at the block, panchayat and booth levels to raise awareness about protecting democracy, the Constitution and voting rights.
