Siliguri, 08th December: On Thursday night, a man was tragically killed in a collision between a cycle and a truck. The deceased cyclist has been identified as Anil Gupta (35), a resident of Ward No. 35 of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC). After the incident, enraged locals staged ‘gherao’ encircling the police officials of the NJP police station.
According to reports, Anil Gupta was on his way to work on his bicycle via the IOC Road of NJP when he was hit by a speeding truck. The truck fled the scene immediately after the incident leaving the severely injured cyclist to succumb to his injuries. Upon receiving the news, officers from the NJP police station promptly arrived, retrieved the body, and transported it to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for a post-mortem examination.
The tragic incident led to widespread outrage among the residents as they gheraoed the police officers protesting against the administration’s lack of response towards the frequent accidents in the area. In this context, the demonstrators cautioned a broader movement if the issue is not resolved in the future.
Meanwhile, Councillor Shampa Nandi arrived in the region and termed the incident as ‘tragic’. She further highlighted that the resolution to the problem would be constructing a speed breaker in the area. She further expressed the several agitations caused by the locals concerning the matter and that the problem would be reported to Mayor Goutam Deb by the police administration.
