Siliguri, 12th May: In a concerted effort to foster a society free from plastic carry bags, cloth bag vending machines were installed at Bidhan Market in Siliguri. Today, two such machines were set up at Bidhan Market’s Sabzi Bazar, and Seth Srilal Market, facilitated by the collaboration of four women’s clubs and Ward No. 11 of Siliguri. Councilor Manjushree Pal and a former councillor from the said ward played a pivotal role in the installation of these machines.
To obtain a cloth bag from the vending machine, individuals are required to insert a Rs 10 coin. This innovative initiative aims to empower the public, enabling them to shop and conveniently carry their purchases in an eco-friendly manner. Speaking on this development, Ward Councilor Manjushree Pal emphasized that the primary objective behind these machines is to cultivate a society that is free from plastic usage. Recognizing that many individuals often forget to bring their own bags while shopping, Pal highlighted the convenience and utility offered by these cloth bag vending machines.
Alka Mittuka, a member of the women’s club involved in the initiative, emphasized the collective responsibility of safeguarding the health of our planet, stating that this Earth belongs to all of us.
