Siliguri, 30th November: An atmosphere of chaos was witnessed in the city surrounding the ‘Puranigam Abhiyan’ called by Siliguri District BJP.
On Tuesday, the BJP leaders took out a rally from Mahatma Gandhi More with mosquito nets in their hands demanding multiple issues including Municipal elections, solution to water supply problems and immediate attention to the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Meanwhile, a huge police force was already present to stop the rally and barricades were set up near SMC.
However, BJP activists tried to break through the barricade. A 10-member team was then allowed inside by the police. Party MLAs and supporters alleged that they were prevented from submitting the memorandum. They then protested near the Mahatma Gandhi statue.
MLA Shankar Ghosh said, “We are repeatedly being obstructed. I was also a councillor for the last five-six years. Is it a crime to be a part of BJP in this state? We have won the election. We won’t tolerate any kind of humiliation.”
On the other hand, MLA Anandamoy Barman said that they are being harassed and humiliated repeatedly as per the instructions of SMC commissioner. Hence, their programme has been suspended as of now.
