Body of missing youth recovered from Teesta Canal in Phansidewa, investigation underway

Phansidewa, 28th April: An atmosphere of shock and concern gripped Phansidewa after the body of a youth missing for three days was found in the Teesta Canal. The deceased youth, identified as Mahesh Chowdhury from Bankimnagar area in Siliguri, was missing for the past three days.


As per reports, the incident surfaced from the Teesta Canal Gate of Power House in the Jalas-nijamtara area of Phansidewa block. The deceased youth, Mahesh Chowdhury, operated a hardware shop in Fulbari and went missing on April 25 after leaving his shop for lunch.

After several attempts to locate the youth, his family filed a missing person complaint at the NJP police station. Eventually, local residents found Chowdhury’s body in the Teesta Canal. Later, the authorities from Phansidewa police station were alerted and retrieved the body, which was subsequently identified by family members.


The body has been sent for post-mortem examination at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) to ascertain the cause of death. Meanwhile, the Phansidewa police have initiated an investigation to determine whether the incident was a case of suicide or murder.
