Siliguri, 21st May: The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) staged a protest at the North Bengal University (NBU) on Tuesday, following the tragic death of the research scholar from the Rural Development Department. Significantly, the protestors burned an effigy of the alleged professor Siddharth Shankar Lahar in front of the administrative building, demanding his removal.
Incidentally, the body of the research scholar was found hanging from the noose in a rented house near Shiv Mandir, adjacent to NBU, last Thursday. The incident has sparked significant unrest and demands for justice within the university community.
Reportedly, the BJYM, led by Arijit Das, president of the Siliguri Organizational District BJYM, gathered in front of the administrative building of the university and burned an effigy of the professor urging for his dismissal. Additionally, the members of the BJYM submitted a memorandum regarding the matter to the Registrar of the university.
In this regard, BJYM President Arijit Das asserted the professor’s involvement in the student’s death, alleging that the CCTV footage captured the professor near the deceased’s residence on the day of the incident. He also questioned the role of the police in the case and called for further investigation.
In response, Registrar Debashish Dutta acknowledged the memorandum submitted by the BJYM and assured that legal steps would be taken. He mentioned that the university had already reassigned some of the professor’s duties to others.
