The West Bengal Government appointed 10 IPS officers (zone-wise) to assist the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by Calcutta HC to probe into post-poll violence reported during West Bengal Assembly elections.

It is to be noted that a few days ago, the Calcutta High Court directed a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into all alleged cases of heinous crimes such as rape and murder in connection with alleged violence following the Assembly election in West Bengal. For other cases involving post-poll violence, the court constituted a special investigation team (SIT) of three senior IPS officers of the West Bengal cadre.
After the Calcutta High Court refused to grant any relief in the post-poll violence case, the Trinamool-ruled government in Bengal opposed the judgment and knocked on the Supreme Court’s doors.
