Alleged misuse of soil meant for government work triggers tension in Fulbari; locals stop dumpers and stage protest

Siliguri, 06th May: Tension erupted in Fulbari on Wednesday following allegations of misuse of filling soil excavated from the Mahananda River near Uttar Kanya for government work.

Locals alleged that although permission was granted for soil extraction for the Bagdogra Airport construction project, a large portion of the soil is not reaching its designated destination and is instead being transported to Fulbari, Jatiakali and nearby areas.

According to sources, the administration had stated that the soil would be used for the airport project. However, residents claimed that while only a few dumpers were seen heading towards the airport, most vehicles were taking alternative routes and dumping soil in other locations, raising suspicion of irregular use under the guise of a government project.

Locals further alleged that many dumpers transporting the soil could not produce valid royalty receipts or required documents. They demanded that all vehicle records be made public for transparency.

Residents also questioned why a large number of dumpers were moving through Fulbari and Jatiakali routes if the soil was genuinely meant for official use. They further complained that continuous movement of heavy vehicles has severely damaged local roads, demanding immediate repair.

On Wednesday, angry locals stopped several dumpers and staged a protest in the area. Police from New Jalpaiguri Police Station reached the spot and attempted to bring the situation under control through discussions with residents.

However, locals have demanded a full and impartial investigation into the alleged misuse of soil meant for government work.
