Agitation over ‘threat culture’ at NBMCH, principal ‘gheraoed’ following decision to suspend five students

Siliguri, 11th September: Tensions flared at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) as students ‘gheraoed’ the principal, Indrajit Saha, until midnight, protesting the decision to suspend five students over their alleged involvement in a ‘threat culture’. A council meeting was convened late on Tuesday night to address the issue.

It is to be noted that the agitation has been ongoing for several days after allegations of ‘threat culture’ surfaced at NBMCH. In response, an investigation committee was formed to probe the matter, and the committee submitted its report on Monday. Following the report, it was decided that five students would be suspended.

However, on Tuesday night, the students, along with members of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), surrounded the principal in protest. They argued that they were not given an opportunity to defend themselves or respond to the allegations, which they claim lack proof. As a result of the protest, the suspension of the five students has been postponed, with another council meeting scheduled for Wednesday afternoon to reassess the decision.
