Siliguri, 07th November: Siliguri Metropolitan Police’s Traffic Department has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against modified silencers. As part of its ongoing crackdown, 209 modified silencers seized by the police were destroyed by running a road roller over them at a programme organised at Airview More. State Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh carried out the destruction, sending a clear message that loud modified silencers would not be tolerated in the city.
The Traffic Department had been conducting regular drives against modified silencers producing excessive noise. During these operations, around 209 such silencers were seized from different locations and subsequently destroyed in public.
Speaking at the programme, Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh said the excessive noise produced by modified silencers causes considerable inconvenience to the public, particularly patients admitted to hospitals, elderly people and pedestrians. He added that such silencers also contribute to noise pollution.
The minister directed the police administration to take strict action not only against motorcyclists using modified silencers but also against those selling them. He further stated that police would conduct raids at shops selling such silencers in the city.
Police Commissioner Syed Waquar Raza said the Traffic Department had seized 209 modified silencers during its recent crackdown and that they had been destroyed. He appealed to residents not to hand over motorcycles to underage children and made it clear that police action against motorcyclists violating traffic rules and those selling modified silencers would continue.
