Siliguri, 21st December: Three passengers were killed in a collision between a government bus and a lorry. The accident surfaced from a national highway near Bidhan Nagar Hospital in Phansidewa block under Siliguri subdivision, on Monday morning. The bus was heading towards Cooch Behar from Kolkata. The front portion of the bus was damaged in the accident.
Upon receiving the news, the Police and fire brigade reached the spot shortly after and recovered three bodies from the bus. Meanwhile, the bus driver managed to escape the scene. The passengers complained that the bus was running at high speed and the driver was frequently talking on his mobile phone. He was allegedly holding the steering wheel with one hand.
The bodies have been sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. Several passengers were also injured in the incident. The administration has arranged for their treatment. The Police have launched a search operation for the accused bus driver.
