Siliguri, 22nd July: A joint operation by GRP and RPF at Siliguri’s NJP railway station led to the rescue of 56 young women from the Capital Express on Monday night. The women were reportedly being taken to Bihar under the pretext of job offers.
According to reports, the victims, hailing from Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and the Dooars region, were promised jobs at an iPhone company in Bangalore. However, they were instead found aboard a Bihar-bound train, raising serious suspicions among the officials.
During the search operation around 9 p.m., GRP and RPF officials noticed the large group of women traveling without tickets. Each of them had a coach and berth number stamped on their hands instead of valid travel documents, further deepening suspicion.
When questioned, the women said they were told they were being taken to Bangalore for work. This prompted officials to ask why they were boarding a train to Bihar if their destination was Bangalore.
Following further inquiry, the women revealed that two individuals, Jitendra Paswan from Kolkata and Chandrika from Siliguri, were escorting them. Acting on this information, the authorities detained both suspects at the station.
After preliminary questioning revealed inconsistencies in their statements, the officials removed all 56 women from the train. Their families were immediately contacted, and later, after family members reached NJP station, the women were handed over to them.
GRP and RPF are currently interrogating the detained duo and have launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
