Kharibari, 10th June: Tension erupted in Jamatulla Jote of Kharibari after a youth was allegedly attacked for protesting against the reckless driving of a tractor. The victim has been identified as Abhijit Singha, an employee at the Bangla Sahayata Kendra.
According to reports, the incident stemmed from a confrontation on Sunday when Abhijit and his family protested the rash driving of a tractor on a village road. Allegedly, instead of slowing down, the tractor owner responded defiantly and threatened to drive faster. Tension flared further on Monday when Abhijit, while on his way to give tuition, was allegedly attacked and beaten severely. He was later admitted to a private hospital in Siliguri for treatment.
Following the incident, Abhijit’s family filed a written complaint against the tractor owner, Bapan Singha, and several others at Kharibari Police Station. In response, Bapan Singha lodged a counter-complaint against Abhijit and 12 members of his family.
Police have launched an investigation into the matter based on the complaints filed by both parties.
