Siliguri, 05th February: A youth was arrested with 22 kilograms of cannabis by plainclothes police of Pradhan Nagar police station under the Siliguri Metropolitan Police, officials said on Wednesday.
The accused has been identified as Naveen Kumar, a resident of Vaishali district in Bihar. Police sources said the youth was allegedly waiting at Siliguri Junction late at night to board a Bihar-bound bus with the intention of trafficking the contraband.
Acting on specific information, plainclothes police from Pradhan Nagar police station conducted a search operation and detained the suspect on the basis of suspicion. During the search, officers recovered three bags containing a total of 22 kg of cannabis from his possession.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the cannabis consignment had been brought to Siliguri from Cooch Behar and was meant to be transported to Bihar. During initial questioning, the accused told police that he is a student of 12 standard and had agreed to carry the consignment for money.
The accused will be produced before the Siliguri court on Thursday. Police said further investigation is underway to trace other persons involved in the trafficking racket.
