Siliguri, 14th December: A youth was arrested by the Matigara police after being found roaming with a firearm in the Matigara police station area. According to police sources, plainclothes personnel of Matigara police carried out an operation late on Saturday night following a tip-off and conducted a search in the Paribahan Nagar parking area.
During the operation, a youth moving suspiciously in the area was stopped and searched. Police recovered one firearm and two rounds of ammunition from his possession, following which he was arrested on the spot. The arrested youth has been identified as Tenge Tamang (24), a resident of the Jorebunglow area under Sonada in Darjeeling district.
Police sources stated that the accused had allegedly purchased the firearm and ammunition from the Panitanki area along the Indo-Nepal border. The accused was produced before the Siliguri court on Sunday, where police sought his remand for further interrogation.
Matigara police are continuing their investigation to trace the source of the illegal firearm and to identify those involved in its supply.
