Youth allegedly picked up in police-marked vehicle and assaulted in Bagdogra; 5 arrested

Bagdogra, 19th June: Tension has erupted in the Putimari area of Bagdogra following allegations that a youth was forcibly picked up in a vehicle marked with ‘police’ and assaulted. The youth, identified as Nishant Roy, was allegedly taken into custody on the night of 16th June and later found injured.


According to reports, Nishant was returning home from North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) when he accidentally broke the side mirror of a police-marked vehicle. It is alleged that the driver of the vehicle immediately picked him up and drove away. His family, after searching extensively, eventually found him at the Bagdogra police station later that night.

The youth was reportedly beaten while in custody. He was released on bail the next day and taken to NBMCH for medical treatment. Nishant is said to have sustained injuries on his hands, feet, back, and other parts of the body. It is further alleged that a police officer wrote a bond in connection with the incident. The youth’s family filed a written complaint at Bagdogra Police Station on Wednesday night.


Acting on a complaint, Bagdogra police arrested five individuals after conducting an investigation into an assault incident. The arrested have been identified as Mukesh Roy, Ramzan Ali, Kishore Thakur, Sudhir Roy, and Birendra Roy.

All five were produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court on Thursday. Police have registered a case against them under Sections 117(2), 137(2), 308/3(5), and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. Further legal proceedings are underway.
