Siliguri, 26th July: Tensions escalated on Thursday evening in Siliguri’s Tulkata Jote area when a woman, Reena Sarkar, staged a protest in front of her in-laws’ house demanding her rights. The situation intensified, leading police to use baton charges to restore order. Nine individuals, including five men and four women, were arrested in connection with the incident.
Reena Sarkar, a resident of Matigara Tulkata Jote, had been involved in a long-term relationship with Jyotirmoy Singha, whom she married after four years. However, shortly after the marriage, Reena alleged that her in-laws expelled her from their home and her husband abandoned her.
In response, Reena began a protest outside her in-laws’ residence, which continued for five days. On Thursday evening, Reena’s family and neighbors escalated the protest by blocking a national highway and attempting to force entry into the in-laws’ house.
The police intervened to control the situation, leading to a confrontation with the protesters, including allegations of attacks on police vehicles. To manage the unrest, the police deployed baton charges. Reena Sarkar and eight others were arrested during the operation.
Reena Sarkar has accused the police of injustice, claiming that their intervention came only after she began fighting for her rights. The police are currently investigating the incident.
