Siliguri, 01st January: A distressing incident surfaced from Matigara where the in-laws of a woman and a couple were apprehended for allegedly stealing a newborn girl child from the maternity ward of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH). The arrested accused have been identified as father-in-law, Naun Das (60), mother-in-law, Bela Das (55), Rajat Biswas (34), and Soma Biswas (28).
According to reports, complainant Vishakha Das lodged a report against her in-laws at the Matigara police station on Sunday accusing them of stealing her newborn. Vishakha Das claimed she had birthed twin girls on December 7 at NBMCH. However, she was informed by her in-laws that one of her twin girls had perished. To her surprise, upon returning home, she learned from her neighbours that her in-laws had allegedly stolen her newborn.
Upon confronting the matter, her in-laws refrained from speaking about the girl child. In response, Vishakha filed a written complaint at the police station on Sunday. The police involved in the investigation subsequently arrested the accused in-laws. During the interrogation, the police learned that the criminals had handed their granddaughter over to a couple from Kawakhali identified as Rajat Biswas and Soma Biswas.
Meanwhile, the police learned that the baby girl was admitted to the ICU of the district hospital. Following this, the authorities arrested the said couple for illegally keeping the newborn. On Monday, all the criminals were produced before the Siliguri court, while the police probed further into the incident.
