Woman’s death in a wild elephant attack sparks unrest in Rajganj

Rajganj, 17th May: A woman, identified as 26-year-old Beauty Roy, was killed in a wild elephant attack on Friday afternoon in the Nadhabari area near Bodaganj under Mantadari Gram Panchayat of Rajganj block. The incident triggered unrest among local residents.


Following the attack, police and forest department personnel arrived at the scene, but were met with protests from local residents who surrounded them. The situation further escalated into shoving, resulting in injuries to four forest personnel. Additionally, two forest department vehicles were allegedly vandalized, creating a tense atmosphere in the area.

The forest department faced significant challenges in recovering Beauty Roy’s body due to the unrest. Later, a large police force from Bhorer Alo Police Station arrived, allowing the personnel to recover the body.


According to local sources, several women in the area collect wood from the nearby forest. It is unclear if Beauty Roy was collecting wood at the time of the attack, but her family claims she was passing through the forest for some work when the elephant attacked her. The family accused forest personnel of inadequate patrolling in the area and demanded increased patrols.

Meanwhile, the body has been sent to the hospital for a post-mortem examination. Manjula Tirkey, ADFO of Baikunthpur Division, confirmed that the woman died in an elephant attack while passing through the forest. She stated that the family of the deceased will be compensated according to forest department regulations.
