Siliguri, 03rd May: In a significant breakthrough, the accused involved in an alleged online scam was successfully arrested after six months since the filing of the complaint. The accused, identified as Debkanto Dey from Ghoghomali, Cooch Behar, posed a brotherly relationship with the victim on social media to gain her trust before swindling her of lakhs of rupees.
According to reports, the incident came to light when Moumita Nag, a resident of Hakimpara in Siliguri, filed a complaint on October 22, 2023, at the Panitanki Outpost. Reportedly, the accused scammer initiated contact with Moumita and introduced himself on social media. Gradually, he gained Moumita’s trust and eventually persuaded her to provide him with Rs 10,000 initially and returned Rs 17,000 later to build up her trust.
Later, he deceived her into handing over around Rs 50,000 on one occasion while returning Rs 70,000. However, his true intentions became apparent when he disappeared after swindling Moumita of lakhs of rupees. Following Moumita’s complaint, the Panitanki Outpost launched an investigation and tracked Debkanto Dey’s mobile tower location. Subsequently, the accused was arrested after six months of filing the report and a case of fraud has been registered against him. On Friday, the accused was presented before the Siliguri Court and taken on remand while the entire incident is under further investigation.
