Woman assaulted over accusations of being a ‘witch’, 3 women arrested in Phansidewa

Phansidewa, 02nd July: Police have arrested three women in connection with the assault of a woman by her in-laws, who accused her of being a witch. The accused, identified as Rani Soren (50), Bacha Soren (44), and Hiramuni Soren (47), were taken into custody from Jujh Tola area of Petki in Phansidewa.


The incident took place on June 26, shortly after the last rites of the woman’s husband were completed. Bachamani Tuku was brutally beaten by her in-laws, who accused her of witchcraft. They then transported her in a vehicle and left her at her brother’s house, claiming she was drunk.

When Tuku did not regain consciousness for two days, her family members admitted her to the hospital, where multiple injury marks were discovered on her body. Following this, her brother lodged a written complaint at the Phansidewa police station.


In response, the police launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the three women on Monday night. The accused were presented in Siliguri court on Tuesday. The police continue to investigate the case.
