Siliguri, 28th October: Pradhan Nagar Police have arrested a woman in connection with an alleged cyber fraud involving blackmail through video calls on social media. The arrest was made under ‘Operation Cyber Prahar’. The accused, identified as Manisha Mondal, is reportedly a resident of Kharibari and was arrested from the Batasi bus stand.
According to police sources, the investigation began following a complaint registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal in September. After nearly a month of detailed investigation, police detected suspicious transactions linked to the alleged cyber fraud and arrested the woman.
The investigation has revealed that a total of ₹91,21,808 was deposited into the accused’s bank account through the alleged cyber fraud. Preliminary findings suggest that people were targeted through video calls on social media and subsequently blackmailed.
Following her arrest, the accused was produced before the Siliguri court, where police sought custody for further interrogation. The court granted five days of police remand.
Police are now investigating the source of the funds and seeking to establish who transferred the money into the accused’s bank account and under what circumstances.
