Siliguri, 27th October: The possibility of closing both railway gates beneath the Mahabirsthan flyover in Siliguri is reportedly being explored as part of railway infrastructure modernisation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. However, no final decision has been taken yet. The prospect of the gates being closed has triggered concern and resentment among local residents.
On Tuesday, Katihar Railway Division DRM Kirendra Narah inspected Siliguri Junction Railway Station and shared updates on the ongoing modernisation work. During the inspection, the possibility of closing both railway gates beneath the Mahabirsthan flyover was also discussed. He stated that further action on the matter would be taken in coordination with the state government.
According to sources, the railway authorities spend crores of rupees every year on maintaining the railway gates beneath the flyover. To reduce this expenditure, the railway administration is discussing the option of closing the gates. The Fuleswari railway gate has already been closed, and the possibility of closing both gates at Mahabirsthan is now being raised.
Both railway gates are considered important for local residents and play a significant role in their daily movement. Their closure could cause considerable inconvenience to commuters and affect everyday travel in the area.
Attention is now focused on discussions between the railway authorities and the state government, as residents await the final decision on the matter.
